The firm is pleased to announce that attorney Matthew Schaap has been elected as a shareholder with Dougherty, Molenda, Solfest, Hills & Bauer P.A.

About Matthew. Matthew is a member of the firm’s commercial and employment litigation practice groups.

He regularly assists clients in a variety of commercial and employment litigation matters, including shareholder disputes, contract disputes, landlord/tenant disputes, defamation suits and employment discrimination actions. He is licensed to practice in Minnesota and Wisconsin in both state and federal court. He has been actively involved in a variety of cases and has first-chaired many matters, including in a six-day arbitration centered on a business asset sale in which his client was awarded $110,315.50 on a promissory note, $215,000.00 in past due patent royalties and $1.6M in future patent royalties, plus attorneys’ fees. Matthew has also presented successful oral arguments in number of significant appeals before the Minnesota Court of Appeals (summary judgment in favor of mortgage industry client upheld) and the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C. (summary judgment in favor of client upheld in Ohio patent infringement litigation).

Matthew has been repeatedly named to the Minnesota Rising Stars® List since 2007 and was selected as a “Top 40 under 40” litigation attorney in the State of Minnesota by the American Society of Legal Advocates.

Matthew enjoys speaking and writing about the legal profession and litigation topics. He recently spoke on litigation and ethics topics at a National Business Institute seminar that aired in January 2015. Matthew also recently joined vocational psychologist and professor Bryan Dik from Colorado State University to co-author the lead article in the November/December 2014 issue of the American Bar Association’s Law Practice Magazine entitled, “From Workaholism to Work-Life Balance: Change is Within Reach.”

Matthew also serves in many volunteer roles in the community. He is President of the Rosemount Rotary Club, Co-Chair of the Apple Valley Chamber of Commerce NextLeaders and a member of the board of directors of the Apple Valley Chamber of Commerce. He also serves as Secretary for the board of directors for Community Dental Care, a non-profit dental clinic with 34 dentists serving low-income patients from clinics in St. Paul, Maplewood, Robbinsdale and Rochester, Minnesota.
